Everyone knows that UV rays cause sunburns, but did you know that UV exposure damages your eye tissue as well? Lengthy, intense exposure to UV rays may increase your risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye conditions that affect your vision. To stay safe, find a pair of sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Darker lenses or more expensive styles do not always translate to better UV protection! When possible, choose wrap-around styles that do not let light in from the side. Sunglasses are not just for summertime or bright days -- UV damage can occur year-round, even during cloudy weather.

UV eye protection is very important! Ultraviolet radiation can damage the lens, cornea, and other parts of the eye. It can also damage the skin of your eyelid and contribute to the development of muscular degeneration and cataracts. Always wear a cap or hat with a wide brim and high-quality sunglasses with UV protection. Certain types of contact lenses also provide additional ultraviolet protection. Pair your sunglasses with a sun-protective hat with a broad brim and sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 50 to triple your protection against the sun's harmful rays!

As this summer gets underway, here are six essential tips for buying the best sunglasses to protect your eyes:

  1.  Choose sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. Keep in mind that labels can sometimes be confusing: some indicate lenses that offer 100 percent protection from UVA/UVB radiation, others offer 100 percent UV 400 protection. Rest assured, both will block 100 percent of the sun's harmful radiation!
  2. Buy oversized. The more coverage you have from your sunglasses, the less sun damage will be inflicted on your eyes. Opt for oversized or wraparound-style glasses, which will help cut down on UV rays entering the eye from the sides.
  3. Don't be fooled by color. While dark lenses may look cool, darker lenses do not always mean that the lenses block UV rays! Always check for UV protection labels to ensure your eyes are properly shielded from UV radiation.
  4. You don't need to pass on cheap sunglasses. Sunglasses don't have to cost a lot of money to provide adequate eye protection. Less expensive pairs marked as 100 percent UV-blocking can be just as effective as pricer options.
  5. Don't forget the kids! Children are just as susceptible to the sun's harmful rays as adults. Start them on healthy habits early! Some brands, such as Babybanz, manufacture protective sunglasses for infants as well.
  6. Consider polarized lenses. Polarization reduces glare coming off reflective surfaces like water, sand, or pavement. Polarization doesn't offer more protection from the sun, but it can make activities like driving or being on the water safer and more enjoyable.
